CollinsDictionary.com just announced the Word of the Year for 2017 and not surprisingly, “Fake News” won the title. Everyone with access to the Internet can be a news producer, so how do we spot fake news and think critically in the “post-truth era”? One way is to ask yourself the five key questions: Who-What-When-Where-Why (In English, we call these the five Ws.). This is one of the things people taking the “English for Media Literacy” MOOC course on analyzing media messages learned. As Stony Brook University Professor Steven Reiner said during a Digital Video Conference with Taiwan last month, “In the digital age, YOU are in charge of determining what is reliable… and what is not!”
